My Very First Book Signing!

My Very First Book Signing!, originally uploaded by eyduck.

This is me at the Long Beach Comic Con yesterday. It was my very first book signing. Strangers bought my books! And I signed them! I have to say, it was a little surreal. I was like, "Really? You want to buy my book? OKAY!!!"

I don't know why it came as such a shock to me that at a convention of readers, people might give me an $8.00 chance. But it did.

One of them (a fellow vendor) read it in one sitting and came back to tell me she loved it and couldn't put it down.

That felt really, really good. Thank you, everyone, for giving my story some of your time and spending your hard earned cash. I do not take it for granted and am eternally grateful.

A Message from Beyond

Maurissa's Awesome Day of the Dead Spooky Birthday Spectacular 2010

Last night was my friend, Lady M's, birthday.

Maurissa's Awesome Day of the Dead Spooky Birthday Spectacular 2010

It was absolutely INCREDIBLE. She decided that since it was her 40th, the midway point between birth and death...

...she would throw a Día de los Muertos Spooky Birthday Spectacular. She hosted a huge sit down dinner in her backyard on white covered tables by candlelight. The ice tongs were skeleton hands and ice cubes had eyeballs in them. We were all invited to come dressed in costume...

She thought of everything. From the Not-A-Playboy-Bunny Photo Station...

...to the fact that a lot of tipsy people would be carrying around lighted candles...

Her home was amazing and I'm totally inspired to bust out at least a can of paint and do something cool with my place.

After dinner and after dinner snacks...

It was time for the main event of the evening! A real live medium was going to come in and do a seance for us!

We all gathered in the living room...

...and non...

The medium's name is Geof Jowett and it was one of those, "Oh. This guy isn't making this up" sort of things.

He was this quiet unassuming guy who started off just sort of talking about his experience and his life and asked if there were any questions, and one of my friend's raised her hand. He started answering and then was like, "Um... can I tell you something?" He said a name, which was her mother's name (who died), the correct year she died, and then said that her mother wanted her to reconcile with her sister (my friend hasn't talked to her sister in five years). And that's where things started. One person after another got messages. He came to me and the stuff he pinpointed no one knows about except my grandma (who passed) and me. I'll get into the message my spirit guides felt was important enough to spend their one shot telling me at the end of this post*, but it was pretty darn amazing. He does readings on the phone and in person and I found it just brought me some peace.

After the seance, it was time for cake. Lady M. began passing out candles. She then had everyone hold the candle tight in their hands and wish for their greediest, non-altruistic wish ever, stick it in her cake, and then she used her birthday with to make all our wishes come true.

*I'm working on transcribing my grandpa's memoirs. He's 94-years old. And the spirit just kept saying how important it was for me to complete my work with his journals. The message was also about making sure I live life joyfully coloring outside the lines. That was actually the biggest message. Creation and joy and tapping into childhood wonder. And I'm down with that.

There was also some stuff about my writing. So, I signed up earlier, but now I'm making it official: I'm doing NaNoWriMo if anyone else would like to join me in pledging. The spirits have commanded me.

I'm IN!

Long Beach Comic Con

Giddy Girlie and Ryan Winn were tired of me sighing longingly kind enough to invite me to come take up some space at their booth (#1704) at the Long Beach Comic Con October 29-31, 2010.

I'll be there October 30-31 signing copies of my book The Woodcutter at a special discounted rate for all of you lovely people awesome enough to come down. I'll also be clearing out the last of my handmade purses to make room for other useless soul fulfilling hobbies that will eat up all my time and closet space give me a sense of pride and accomplishment. Mark it off the list

I used to have a 45-minute bus ride to and from elementary school every morning. I'd sit in the back of the bus with my best friend, Austin Adamson, and we would talk about how we were going to grow up to be authors and write books. We would read each other's short stories and outline the series we were going to rock the world with. I remember my feeling of pride that I had been able to write a whole twelve-pages. I've still got those landscape, soft brown papers with their blue dotted lines and thick scrawl tucked away somewhere. I can still feel that large pencil gripped tightly in my little hands, its bitable red paint and fat lead gliding over the bumpy surface.

Today, that 4th grade dream became a reality. I haven't had a chance to really feel it yet, in between the dumb non-stop phonecalls and errands that involve running up and down four stories worth of stairs.

But when I have a moment tonight to realize what has happened... I'm an author. I didn't wait for anyone to give me permission. I decided I believed in myself enough to do this. So I did it.

It's official!

It's a reality that no one can take away from me. The end.

The Woodcutter

A million years ago, I would meet up with Miss Bliss and a gal named Trina at various dive cafes every Monday night. We had each expressed an interest in writing a story, so we kept each other on track and checked in with one another and got it done. I would not have finished this project without them and I am so grateful.

This story has been sitting on my computer since then, but now, it can sit on your computer, too.

May I present my very first novel, now available on Amazon as an e-Book.

Ladies and Gentleman...

CHOC Walk

Hey Team Awesome!

There is an incredible hospital out here in California called CHOC. They practice state of the art, cutting edge medicine... and they also treat every child regardless of ability to pay.

To offset these costs, once a year they host a walk and Giddy Girlie and I are taking part. Won't you consider donating? Anything helps. A buck. Five bucks. Maybe grabbing a PB&J and donating the $7 for that Burger King combo #11 you were going to get.

In addition, Giddy Girlie is donating all proceeds from her etsy shop to CHOC walk. Seriously. That's pretty cool. Great stuff AND you'll be helping out some kids who really need some help.
